Are you confident? Do you have stamina? Do you have a flexible attitude? Are you punctual? Are you determined? Are you always well-groomed. Can you manage your finances? - work is rarely regular. You will be responsible for your own Income Tax returns and National Health contributions.

Yes to all? Then read on.

To start with, if an agency asks for a joining fee - RUN.

No reputable agency will ask for a joining or registration fee.

Do not be pressurised into paying for a portfolio in order to join an agency.

Portfolio's and Comp Cards are essential and are worth investing in at some stage. However, to start you off there are lots of budding photographers who will take your photographs in return for your time. TFP/TFCD. Alternatively you may know someone with a digital camera who can produce some acceptable images in JPEG or JPG format. Photographs taken with mobile phones are rarely acceptable. It is worth putting time and effort into getting some decent images. The photographs you submit are your 'shop window' and you must look your very best.

Aim to get at least a couple of Head shots with two different expressions or in different surroundings. A Black & White headshot is always a good old standby. Some full length shots to confirm the proportions of your body. Leotards, bodysuits, bikini's etc will streamline and flatter your figure for full length shots. High heels will make your legs look more shapely. Vary your outfits, expressions and positions and try to get some shots both indoors and out. Practice in front of a full length mirror in advance. Be individual. What makes you different from everyone else?

Browse through your favourite mags to see how the models are posed.

Perhaps you are a trained ballet dancer or an acrobat? These skills can be introduced into the photographs. Perhaps you are a girl biker. Use your bike as a prop for some of the shots. Wear clothes that you feel comfortable in - this will reflect in the overall result you will get with your photo's. You don't have to buy a new outfit for the shoot. Look in your wardrobe and see what you can put together. The outfits you wear for the photographs are not neccesarily outfits you would wear everyday. Remember, less is sometimes more. Sexy skimpy clothing is often more alluring if revealed under a garment rather than 'full on'. It may be some time before you get an opportunity to have more photo's taken so think ahead. How will you feel about the photographs in six months time? No personal clutter in the background. Try to find a clear space, or open space, trees, or a brick wall if outside so that you are the focal point in the photographs.

    Posing
Think about your pose. Take a while to loosen up, relax and connect with your photgrapher. Think about how you feel most comfortable.
